Name: |
Societe de formation a distance des commissions scolaires du Quebec (SOFAD) |
Region: |
North America - Canada |
Description: |
Distance education has existed in Quebec since 1946 and was part of the Ministry of Education for most of that period. In 1995, the Ministry decided to divest itself of this responsibility. Since then the direct services to students are offered by some 50 school boards who also established a new not-for-profit agency (SOFAD) responsible for developing the learning materials. The school boards offer a wide range of courses: academic courses (English, French, mathematics, social sciences, science, personal and social development) that provide credit toward a high school leaving diploma, vocational education courses that lead to a vocational education diploma, manpower up-grading courses and popular education courses. |
